World Cleanup Day: Small Actions, Big Impact

Every year, millions of people around the globe come together for World Cleanup Day, a movement that reminds us that protecting the planet starts with each of us. Since its launch in 2008, this initiative has grown into one of the largest civic actions in history, with over 71 million volunteers from 191 countries participating in 2023 alone.

The numbers are staggering- the world generates over 2.24 billion tonnes of solid waste annually, and at least 33% of it is mismanaged, ending up in open dumps, rivers, or oceans (World Bank, 2022). Plastic is one of the worst offenders. The UN estimates that 11 million tonnes of plastic flow into oceans every year, harming marine life and even entering our food systems.

World Cleanup Day isn’t just about one day of action. It’s about sparking conversations, shifting habits, and inspiring communities to rethink waste. From segregating at source to reducing single-use plastics, small steps taken collectively create a ripple effect.
