The Met Gala 2025 was a night of star-studded glamour, but it also brought the conversation on sustainability front and center. Amid the extravagance, there were moments that made us proud, and others that left us questioning fashion’s true impact on the planet.
Some celebs chose to lead with conscious style. Zendaya, for example, redefined archival fashion by wearing a vintage Givenchy piece, promoting the idea of re-wearing rather than purchasing new. Similarly, Emma Chamberlain embraced secondhand fashion by accessorizing with items sourced from eBay, showcasing the power of sustainable shopping.
However, some fashion choices were a stark reminder of how far we have to go. Leather, feathers, and other animal-derived materials made their way down the carpet, perpetuating a cycle of harm and waste. These outdated practices feel out of step with a world striving for compassion and sustainability.
Amidst the glamour, there was one standout feature that gave hope— the blue carpet. Crafted by Neytt by Extraweave, a Kerala-based brand, the carpet was made using biodegradable sisal fibers from Madagascar. For the third year in a row, the carpet’s eco-friendly design was a true triumph, proving that sustainability can indeed be woven into even the most luxurious events.
The Met Gala 2025 proved that sustainability is slowly creeping into fashion, but it’s clear: there’s still more work to be done.
